The Chocolate Protein Powder That Actually Tastes Like Chocolate

(We use the real thing, organic non-alkalized cocoa)

Fudge brownie, sea salt, smooth cream. Those are the tasting notes, and they come from the hand-picked cocoa we use, not from a flavoring.

Most chocolate protein powder is flavored with "natural flavors" that never came near a cocoa bean. We use organic, non-alkalized cocoa.

Because nothing tastes like the real thing.

Our protein blend is one of the blandest around, and that’s deliberate. Why do we want you to know our base is bland? Because a neutral base lets the cocoa come through light and delicate, instead of buried under flavoring.

Cocoa is also where heavy metals get in. See our test results below.

Of the powders that do use real cocoa, most use the Dutch-process kind. Alkalizing does several things at once. It changes the color, cuts the acidity, helps it disperse and softens the bitterness. It also strips out much of the flavanol content along the way. How much depends on how hard the cocoa is treated. Ours is non-alkalized, so we don’t needlessly destroy the goodness inside the cocoa.

Cadmium is the metal that matters in cocoa, and it comes from the soil the cacao grew in. No processing step can remove it. Sourcing is the only place to fix it. That’s why third party labs test each crop batch our supplier produces before we commit to buying a lot. How much cocoa we use matters too. RISE311 has a much cleaner heavy metal profile than almost any other plant-based or vegan powder because of our rigorous sourcing and testing. Every batch and every flavor sits below the Prop 65 limits for heavy metals.

WHAT MAKES RISE311 DIFFERENT?

Golden wheat barley stalks in a field backlit by a bright sun at sunset.
Black outline of a sprouting barley grain

zero bloat, every time

Most plant proteins skip the steps that make protein easy to digest. We don't. Our barley is sprouted, our pea protein is processed to strip the anti-nutrients and a protease enzyme blend helps your body break it all down.

Then there's what we leave out. Many brands use cheap ingredients like carrageenan and cellulose gum (linked to gut irritation) to help with “mouth feel”. We use Acacia: a prebiotic so gentle that it's sold as a premium supplement in its own right.

We tested 311 recipes to eliminate gritty texture. The result? Smooth in a shaker, creamy in a blender, zero settling. No more chalky residue coating your throat.

30g Protein, 3g Leucine, Every Serving

Every serving of RISE311 is designed to actually support recovery and muscle growth. Most protein powders are low in protein or leucine.

RISE311 scores 1.0 PDCAAS, the top of the scale. Every essential amino acid at the level your body needs. That means all of the 30g can be used immediately (most plant-based powders are low in one or more). 3g of leucine is the trigger for muscle growth and repair at any age (it switches on mTOR, the pathway that does the building). Most other protein powders do not reach this level (so you need more than a serving). RISE311 gives you it all in each serving.

Questions People Ask

What makes RISE311 different from other protein powders?

RISE311 is the world’s first craft protein. Combining excellent taste with full-spectrum protein, this is more than just protein; it's a uniquely satisfying experience.

Why do you not offer discounts?

You’ll see that, unlike other shakes and powders, we don’t offer discount codes (they’re not available in our email series either). In fact, we don’t do sales. The reason? We think that too many companies give discounts to new customers and forget about their current customers. That doesn’t feel fair to us. So we offer reductions for customers on subscriptions (in the pricing), and we have a referral program for customers.

In other words, we look after our community.

The only discount we are planning to introduce is a Veteran and Service discount (which should be going live shortly). If you’d like to know more, please email support and ask.

How does RISE311 compare to a whey chocolate protein powder?

RISE311 compares very well (it had to). RISE311 was formulated for people who train or need to be in shape for a living. On the amino acids and especially leucine, RISE311 matches wheys. On digestion, RISE311 beats whey. Each serving has 30g of complete protein at a 1.0 PDCAAS (the same score as whey). Plus every serving has 3g of leucine (more than many "performance whey" powders).

RISE311 has a few major advantages over whey. It’s vegan. It has no lactose. And we include a protease enzyme blend for better protein digestion, so RISE311 is gentler on your stomach. Around half of whey users report bloating or discomfort (even if dairy isn’t the problem). RISE311 was designed to solve that problem without sacrificing any health or performance benefits.

Is chocolate protein powder higher in heavy metals?

Higher than vanilla? Yes. Cocoa carries more heavy metals than vanilla does. The big reason is that cocoa picks up cadmium very efficiently from the soil while it grows. Most brands don’t test for heavy metals (nor release their test results). Our results are on this page (and yes, every flavor we have is below the Prop 65 limits for heavy metals). How do we manage that? We test every raw ingredient. Our base proteins are very low in heavy metals (meaning we’re starting from a lower place than most other plant powders). And we have our suppliers test every lot using ICP-MS analysis before we choose which lots to buy. We don’t stop there. We then use a third party lab to test the raw ingredients ourselves, and the same third party lab tests the final RISE311 pouch on every batch. Is that paranoid? Perhaps. But a supplier’s certificate isn’t the same as an independent lab giving us a result.

Is chocolate protein powder good for you?

Yes, if it’s a good one. That sounds like a dodge, but there are many factors that we think go into whether a protein powder is actually good for you. These include factors like:

  • Protein per calorie
  • Leucine per serving
  • Which sweetener, and how much
  • Which gums, if any
  • Known gut irritants
  • Heavy metal testing, with published results

Chocolate makes that last one matter more, because cocoa picks up more cadmium from the soil than vanilla does. Most brands will quote you their protein number and stay quiet on the rest. Ours are all on this page.

Protein powder is one part of good health, of course. Good food, proper training, fiber and sleep among many other aspects do the rest.

Is 30g of protein too much for one shake?

No. There’s no hard ceiling on how much protein your body can use in one sitting. It’s more of a curve: the response keeps rising, then starts to flatten somewhere around 50g.

What that means in practice is that your body can use more than the 20 to 25g most brands offer. Around 30 to 40g is typically where you get enough leucine to trigger the muscle-building pathway, and leucine is what tells your body to build and repair.

So why do a lot of brands stop at 20 to 25g? Sweeteners and sugar. They bring calories with them, so the protein comes down to keep the serving in range. RISE311 gives you 30g of protein and 3g of leucine in 160 calories.

Spreading your protein across the day is still sensible, and still what we’d recommend. And when you compare shakes, check the grams of leucine, not just the grams of protein.

Why do doctors say no to protein powder?

Most of them don’t. The majority of clinicians are fine with protein powder, and many recommend it.

Where the caution comes from is a supplement’s quality, not protein. For example, some powders are reported as clean but contain gums known to irritate your gut lining. Some brands test high for heavy metals, and few companies publish results either way. The key is choosing a quality product, and ideally one that publishes its testing (and it’s why our test results are on this page).

Remember, protein powder is simply a convenient way of hitting your protein targets each day. Being healthy, and training well, is more involved than simply taking enough protein.
