If you've ever tried to find the 'right' protein powder for weight loss, you know it's an overwhelming task. Walmart sells 315 products tagged "protein powder for weight loss." Amazon's search returns more than 1,500. Reddit threads have ranked them. Your friend Karen has strong opinions about three of them.
Most articles repeat the stuff you already know, hide their methodology, and give the top scores to the protein company that paid for the placement.
So we're going to do better. We'll explain the criteria for ranking protein powders for fat loss first. Then we'll score various proteins, including our own, against each other (and believe it or not, we actually concede where we think RISE311 loses).
Why should you believe us?

We know what works in the real world to help you lose weight, and we want to share it with you.
Before we dive in: let's make one thing very clear. We don't 100% believe weight loss is a separate category for protein. The phrase "Diet Protein" is JUST marketing. A good protein powder will help you lose weight (if you know how to use it).
Our hope is that by the end of this article, you'll know the criteria to look for on the labels so you can decide for yourself.
The 5-Minute Version
We picked 14 brands across whey and plant-based types. Published six criteria up front, adjusted every metric to be the equivalent of a 30g serving of protein (we'll explain exactly why we chose 30g below), and ranked the brands from hard data, not editorial preference.
One important weight-loss lever that is rarely discussed is protein-per-calorie. Whey isolate powders win that lever. Plant-based proteins often have a lower ceiling because of the source material. But there is nuance within the protein-per-calorie math because there's a hidden variable: taste. If you can't drink a protein with water and need to sweeten it with banana, milk, or juice, you've added 100–200 calories. That's more than the gap between any two products on this list.
Protein-per-calorie is one of six criteria we use. The others (leucine, amino acid completeness – the right levels of amino acids so your body can use, sweetener used to avoid gut irritants, formulation cleanliness avoiding poor quality gums and testing transparency) split the field. Some "clean" brands carry Clean Label certifications with carrageenan and sucralose still in the formula (known to cause gut irritation and bloat). Some "organic" brands test 564% over Consumer Reports' lead safe-limit. One "weight loss" brand has maltodextrin (a high-GI carb) as its second ingredient (an ingredient best avoided for lose weight).
Read the criteria. Then read the brands. By the end you'll have the answers and tools you need to evaluate any protein powder you encounter next.

The Problem With Most "Best Protein for Weight Loss" Articles
Type that phrase into Google and most of what comes back is sponsored. The brand ranking #1 is usually the one paying the highest commission. The disclosure is buried in 8-point gray text at the bottom (if it's disclosed at all). How do we know? Frankly, we've been surprised on many many occasions when journalists pitch us. Tell us how much they love the product. Followed by demanding a fixed fee or commission link. The higher we give the commission, the higher they'll rank us.
As we said, we're going to do something different: explain the exact criteria that matter for choosing a protein powder for fat loss. That way you can pick the right protein for your body, not the one with the biggest ad budget.
But first, we're going to explain exactly how protein works for fat loss and the three myths we hear all the time (and why the answers matter for your fat loss journey).
Why Protein Helps Weight Loss
Protein can do some of the heavy lifting in fat loss, but not always for the reasons you might think. Here's what it actually does inside your body:
- It silences hunger at the hormone level. Protein lowers ghrelin (the "I'm hungry" signal) and raises leptin and GLP-1 (the "I'm full" signals). A 30g protein breakfast keeps you full until lunch. A bagel or a full stack of pancakes, not so much.
- Your body torches calories just digesting it. You burn 25-30% of protein's calories breaking it down. Carbs cost 5-10%. Fat costs 0-3%. Eat 100 calories of protein, you net around 70. The other macros don't pull this kind of weight.
- It builds and protects muscle: your metabolic engine. Muscle burns calories 24/7, even when you're sitting down watching TV. Protein feeds muscle, and one amino acid in particular (leucine) flips the switch that tells your body to grow muscle or to hold onto it. So, in a calorie deficit, it protects the muscle you've already built. Without enough protein, you lose fat AND muscle, and end up looking softer, maybe even flabbier.
- Blood sugar stays steady. Protein blunts the glucose spike from carbs. No spike, no crash. Without the crash, perhaps that 3pm cookie craving fades.
- After 40, your body has to work harder. Your body gets less efficient at using protein with age (a phenomenon researchers call anabolic resistance). You need closer to 30g per meal, plus 3g of leucine to trigger muscle building, versus ~20g in your 20s.
For women in perimenopause and menopause, falling estrogen levels accelerate muscle loss. Meaning you need even more protein, not less. Your aging gut also digests protein less efficiently, which is why source and quality need to be prioritized more after 40.
Why a shake is the cheat code
Hitting 30-40g of protein at every meal from chicken and eggs alone is a part-time job. A high-quality shake delivers it in 30 seconds with no cooking. The catch: a lot of protein powders are relatively high in calories in comparison to their protein content. Not to mention, most protein powders are built for 22-year-old bodybuilders, not 45-year-old guts.
Before we score anything, three myths keep coming up as we talk with our community.
Three Myths the Diet-Protein Category Runs On
Myth 1: "Low-calorie protein is best for weight loss."
Calories matter for weight loss. No argument.
Protein has 4 calories per gram. So guess what? More protein = more calories. The answer isn't fewer calories in your protein supplement. Otherwise, a protein supplement with 1g of protein would be the best possible weight loss supplement. Only 4 calories per serving.
The right metric is protein-per-calorie.
Translation: you want a supplement that's mostly protein, not padded with carbs, fat, and filler.
Not all "protein" on a label is the same purity. Whey concentrate is around 75% pure protein. Whey isolate climbs to 90%. Pea protein isolate sits around 80–85%.
So which is better for fat loss? A drink with 90-cal serving and 15g of protein or a drink with 160-cal serving and 30g of protein?
To hit 30g, you'd drink 2 servings of the first shake (180 calories) or 1 serving of the second (160 calories). The "low-calorie" option is just smaller. (Same trick as a "tall" Starbucks being the smallest size.) Low calories is the wrong measure. Protein per calories gives you the right information.
Myth 2: "Keto protein is better for fat loss."
Keto protein is low-calorie protein in a different costume. Fat loss happens in a calorie deficit, period. Any decent protein powder is already low in carbs and added sugar. The "keto" label is a marketing wrapper (see Myth 1 for why you want to instead think in terms of protein per calorie).
Myth 3: "Whey makes you gain weight."
Blaming whey for calories is like blaming the spoon for the soup.
The problem is sugar sweeteners, dietary fat enhanced or 200+ calorie formulations. Not the whey itself.
A clean whey isolate runs 110–120 calories per 25g of protein.
(The myth probably stuck because mass-gainers are usually whey-based. Mass gainers and protein powders aren't the same product.) Look at the calories, not the ingredients to judge the weight gain risk.
Whey vs Plant-Based: Why We Compared Both
A quick word on this very old and very heated debate. We've included both whey and plant-based products in our list because the answer to the questions depends on your body (not on tribal loyalty as Dave from Reddit might have you believe). Both whey and plant-based have real strengths and potential trade-offs.
Whey wins on:
- Protein-per-calorie (whey isolate is almost pure protein)
- Complete amino acid profile (all the amino acids at the right level for your body), rich in leucine
- Lighter taste and thinner texture
- Typically lower in heavy metals than plant sources
Whey loses on:
- Digestion. Roughly 1 in 2 adults struggle with it: bloating, gas, low-grade inflammation. The symptoms you don't want to describe at the office.
- Hormones and skin. Whey can spike growth-related hormones in some people, which sometimes shows up as acne.
- Antioxidants and phytonutrients — great for overall longevity and health. Whey has none. Plants have plenty.
- Environmental footprint. Dairy is not environmentally friendly.
Plant-based wins on:
- Long-term health markers (cardiovascular, longevity)
- Phytonutrients and antioxidants (whey has none of either) — which supports long-term health markers
- Often easier on the gut (no lactose, simpler peptide chain structures)
- Environmentally responsible option
Plant-based loses on:
- Most plant proteins present earthier or chalkier than whey, unless the brand has done specific flavor-system work (which means you're less likely to keep going and get all the benefits)
- Heavy metals. Plants pull from soil which can be high in heavy, so third-party testing matters more here.
- Leucine per gram. You need slightly more total protein to hit the magic muscle-building threshold.
None of these advantages and disadvantages are fixed in stone. A well-formulated plant protein can capture most of whey's strengths without the digestive cost. A well-formulated whey can include digestive enzymes to soften that cost. The key is for you to know the downsides so you can judge if the protein powder has addressed them properly.

Why digestion gets harder past 35
Proteins are chains of amino acids. Short chains are called peptides; longer chains are called polypeptides.
Your gut breaks those chains apart so your body can use the individual amino acids. Long chains take more work.
Past 35, the enzymes that do that work get less efficient. So someone who lived on whey shakes at 25 starts feeling bloated on the same brand at 45.
If you bloat, it's not in your head.
A note for women in perimenopause and menopause
Falling estrogen accelerates muscle loss, which makes leucine (the master amino acid) content matter more.
Whey generally has more leucine per gram. Most plant proteins take slightly more total grams to match the threshold.
Women also report whey-related bloating more often than men (biology, body awareness, or both, we don't know). None of this changes the criteria. It can change the weighting i.e. if you're female — you'll want to pay more attention to digestion features and leucine content in protein powders.
What we're NOT claiming
That one type of powder (whey or plant-based) beats the other on every metric. They're different categories with different strengths. Whey wins protein-per-calorie. Plant-based wins long-term health markers. Our recommendation: pick the category that fits your body and goal, then compare within the category.
The Six Criteria That Actually Matter
Most comparison articles open with the ranking, then justify it. We're flipping that. Here are the methods we will use:
First: where we quote costs, we've standardized to 30g of protein per serving. That's roughly the body's working dose for muscle recovery and growth. It's also where most people start to feel full. Rather than compare cost per serving between, say, one product with 15g of protein and another with 20g, we compare both at a standard 30g of protein.
Second: we've only used published data. If a brand doesn't publish a number (on their website, on Amazon) or we couldn't find it after many hours of digging, we record that as "doesn't publish." Why? Opacity is itself a finding. If you've found the information, please email us. We'll amend the article.
One important distinction
The word "clean" gets used two ways in protein:
- Clean formulation: no known irritants in the powder.
- Clean sourcing: verified by published third-party testing.
Few brands deliver both.
So, the 6 criteria are:
1. Protein % in a 30g standard serving
This is the strongest weight-loss lever. The whole point of supplementing protein on a diet is to deliver protein with as few calories as possible. It keeps you full so you eat less, and stops you from losing muscle (so you lose fat, the actual goal of dieting).
Math: multiply the total protein in a serving by 4 (since 1g of protein has 4 calories) and divide by the total calories in a serving.
Protein × 4 ÷ Total Calories.
Higher is better. RISE311 hits 75%. Transparent Labs hits 93%. Orgain Plant-Based hits 56%.
If a protein is good with water, these percentages are all that matter. But if your protein is unpleasant, and you need to sweeten it with banana, milk, or juice to get it down, that's another 100–200 calories. Clearly, that's more than the gap between any two products on this list (so do keep it in mind).
And the gap itself is only big at the extremes. 75% vs 93% is about 30 calories per serving. But 56% vs 93% is about 85 calories per serving. The first is more noise. The second is real when you're trying to lose weight, and every calorie matters.
2. Leucine content
Leucine is the master amino acid. It triggers your body's anabolic pathway (the technical name is mTOR), which tells your body to hold onto muscle.
In a calorie deficit, the goal is preservation, not new growth. Leucine is the lever.
You need roughly 3g of leucine per serving to trigger the pathway. Most proteins don't hit it. A lot of plant proteins especially fall short (unless the brand designed the formula for leucine specifically).
3. Amino acids at the right level (PDCAAS)
PDCAAS (Protein Digestibility-Corrected Amino Acid Score) measures protein quality on a 0 to 1.0 scale.
1.0, the highest possible score, means every essential amino acid is present at the optimal levels.
Less than 1.0 means your body can't use all of the protein when you consume it. You're limited by the lowest amino acid. This means you might eat 30 grams of protein, but only utilize 24 grams. The other 6 grams wait around like they're stuck in a doctor's office, waiting for more amino acids to come along.
A lot of brands don't publish this, nor do they publish the amino acid table so you can calculate the PDCAAS yourself. Hard to trust a protein is complete if you don't see the proof.
4. Sweetener and sugar load
This is about avoiding calories, or artificial sweeteners we know (from research) aren't good for your gut.
Added sugar (cane, agave, brown rice syrup) means added calories: not great when you're trying to lose weight.
Artificial sweeteners (sucralose and acesulfame potassium especially) have both been linked to gut microbiome disruption in research (fancy words for bloat and discomfort).
Carb fillers like maltodextrin (a high-GI starch) shouldn't be near anything marketed for weight loss. They're cheap, and they add calories with no benefit.
The cleanest options for sweeteners are Reb-M (Reb-M is one component of stevia, under 0.1% of the stevia leaf, which gives the cleanest taste profile of any stevia extract), followed a bit behind by monk fruit (as it has a lot of licorice notes in the taste — obviously not a problem if you like licorice).
5. Clean formulation
This is "what's in the powder besides the protein." The list of issues is long, and you'll never see all of it unless brands publish complete sourcing e.g. Soy lecithin processed using best practices is less of a problem than soy lecithin processed with hexane.
What we see as red flags:
- Carrageenan: gut inflammation links.
- Problematic gums (cellulose gum, xanthan gum, carboxymethylcellulose, guar): bind water in the gut, linked to bloating.
- Soy lecithin: typically processed with hexane (which is actually a nervous system depressant).
- Maltodextrin and other starch fillers (blood sugar spikes making you feel hungrier and potential digestive issues).
- Soybean oil (inflammation risks)
- Artificial flavors and colors (gut and digestion issues)
Gums and lecithins with cleaner supply chains, or those that are known to be prebiotic (like sunflower lecithin and acacia gum), are actually of benefit to your health.
Also look for proteins that add the real flavor ingredient itself. This has a significant health and flavor advantage (e.g. real vanilla bean for vanilla, real cocoa for chocolate, real strawberry powder for strawberries…you get the idea).
6. Testing and sourcing transparency
Heavy metals (lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury) are quite unhealthy. And they accumulate over time. The body doesn't expel them quickly. Lead in bones can stay for decades.
Plants are particularly exposed because they pull metals from soil they're grown in.
For this variable, we've looked for third-party testing, published certificates of analysis (COAs), and athletic certifications like NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport (which require testing for every batch).
Critical caveat that may be misleading: the Clean Label Project certification tests for contaminants only. Some products recommended on their site have low heavy metals (their definition of clean) but contain three or more known gut irritants. This is why criteria 5 and 6 are treated differently. More clean testing does not always equal "clean formulation."
A side note on fiber
A lot of "weight loss" protein powders pack in extra fiber: inulin, soluble corn fiber, agave inulin, soluble fiber blends. The marketing logic is that fiber boosts satiety. The physiological reality is that fiber inside the shake slows protein absorption.
We encourage daily fiber intake. Aim for 25–35g a day. Just get it from food, or add it to your shake on the side (a handful of raspberries, chia, oats, berries). Treat fiber as something you pair with the shake, not something that comes in the powder. That way, the choice of whether to add fiber is yours.
The 14-Brand Comparison
The proteins are not ranked best to last (because bluntly: we might be biased)
Instead, brands are sorted by cost per 30g of protein (most expensive first) within their category (whey vs plant-based).
Clearly we'd expect more expensive brands to have more ticks (since you're paying more, it should meet more criteria). Cheaper brands would be expected to meet fewer criteria. This generally holds with a few surprises (otherwise, I doubt this list would be that interesting).
We chose not to rank them "best to last" because we DO have skin in this game (we make a protein powder after all). So it's difficult for us to take an objective view. This way, you can see each protein judged against each criteria and decide for yourself which factors you think are most important.
Protein-per-calorie % uses the §5 formula: (protein g × 4) / total calories. The three tick/cross columns translate criteria 4–6: a tick means the brand passes that criterion (no gut-irritating sweeteners, clean formulation, publishes testing data); a cross means it fails.

Strengths:
- Cleanest whey in this lineup, full stop. Four ingredients: grass-fed whey isolate, natural flavor, stevia, sea salt. Gums, soy lecithin, artificial flavors, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium are all absent. Worth recognizing the difference as so many wheys out there are pretenders in comparison. NSF Certified for Sport plus per-batch heavy metals COA via lot-number lookup. The testing matches the formulation honesty.
Weaknesses:
- Leucine isn't published, only calculated. Whey isolate typically delivers around 10–11% of total protein as leucine, which lands ~2.8–3g for the 28g serving. Likely at threshold; not confirmed on the label.
- Whey-based, so off the table for plant-based readers, dairy-sensitive readers, and anyone managing whey-related digestive friction (no digestive enhancers like protease enzymes).
Who it's right for: A 35+ reader who tolerates whey well, wants the cleanest possible whey isolate at a fair sport-certified price. If you're concerned with digestion or longevity, the conversation moves to a different type or product (either plant-based or whey with heavily fortified digestive assistance).
Isopure Zero Carb 100% Whey Isolate (Creamy Vanilla)
100% whey isolate. Big-box stores and supplement retail.
The brand says: "100% pure whey protein isolate. Zero carbs, zero lactose, zero fat."
Data: 25g protein · 110 cal · 90.9% protein-per-calorie · ~2.7g leucine (calculated with our best guess, not published) · $0.06–$0.08 per gram of protein.
Strengths:
- Top-tier protein-per-calorie (90.9%). Genuinely lean fuel.
- Lowest cost-per-gram-of-protein tier ($0.064 on sale).
Weaknesses:
- Leucine not published. The calculated estimate (~2.7g) misses the 3g muscle-trigger threshold most adults past 35 actually need.
- Soy lecithin, xanthan gum and artificial flavors. Common gut-stressors past 35 years old.
Who it's right for: A 25-year-old who lifts five days a week, has zero digestive issues and is mid-cut. If you're 40+ or your gut has issues with whey, look further.
RYSE Loaded Protein (Vanilla Ice Cream)
Whey blend with MCT oil and organic agave inulin. Clean Label Project Clean 16 certified.
The brand says: "Loaded whey protein with MCT oil and prebiotics for next-level recovery and gut health."
Data: 25g protein · 140 cal · 71.4% protein-per-calorie · ~3g leucine (calculated, not published) · $0.07 per gram of protein.
Strengths:
- Clean Label Project Clean 16 certification, meaning it tested below detection on 16 named contaminants. Worth recognizing even when the formulation itself is busy.
- MCT oil and organic agave inulin add a subtle satiety lever the cheap wheys skip.
Weaknesses:
- The formulation is one of the messiest in this lineup. Carrageenan, xanthan gum, cellulose gum, sucralose, acesulfame potassium, soy and/or sunflower lecithin (variable), plus artificial flavors. Six gut-stressor flags in one product.
- The Clean Label badge measures contamination, not formulation. A product can be clean from heavy metals and still contain known gut stressors.
Who it's right for: A 25-year-old who prioritizes taste and a recognizable badge of honor over what's actually in the bag.
Ghost Whey (Cereal Milk)
Whey blend (isolate, concentrate, hydrolysate) with added digestive enzymes.
The brand says: "100% whey blend with proteases, bromelain, and lactase to support digestion."
Data: 25g protein · 130 cal · 76.9% protein-per-calorie · leucine not published · ~$0.06 per gram of protein.
Strengths:
- Digestive enzyme blend (proteases, bromelain, lactase) actually addresses the gut friction most cheap wheys cause. Sunflower lecithin is the right call over soy.
- Flavor reputation is genuine. The Cereal Milk SKU is the one that converts whey-skeptics into whey-drinkers.
Weaknesses:
- Prop 65 warning printed on the label. That's a state-mandated heavy metals disclosure.
- Cellulose gum, xanthan gum, sucralose, and artificial flavors. While the enzymes help digestion, these other irritants are still likely doing different harm to the gut.
Who it's right for: A gym-going millennial who buys on flavor first, wants a little digestive assistance with the dairy protein, and isn't concerned with gut issues from irritants.
Myprotein Impact Whey (Vanilla Ice Cream)
Whey concentrate. UK-direct, US-shipped.
The brand says: "Impact Whey Protein delivers 21g of protein per serving with low sugar and low fat to support muscle building and recovery."
Data: 19g protein (Vanilla SKU; Unflavored variant is 22g, but the marketing claim follows the unflavored figure) · 100 cal · 76.0% protein-per-calorie · leucine not published · ~$0.06 per gram of protein.
Strengths:
- Among the cheapest wheys per gram of protein in the lineup. Volume buyers stacking multi-flavor orders keep coming back for the cost.
- Sunflower lecithin instead of soy. Small win, but worth flagging because most wheys at this price tier still default to soy.
Weaknesses:
- The Vanilla SKU delivers 19g per serving. At a 30g serving target, you're paying for an extra scoop to hit a 30g serving of protein.
- 2020 California Prop 65 settlement of $198,000 for lead and cadmium contamination. No published COA in the years since.
Who it's right for: A 22-year-old with a discount code stacking 5kg orders for Costco-style cost-per-gram. Or someone over 35 with no digestive issues.
Quest Protein Powder (Vanilla Milkshake)
Whey isolate + casein blend.
The brand says: "Quality protein with no added sugars, soy free, and gluten free."
Data: 24g protein · 110 cal · 87.3% protein-per-calorie · leucine not published · no heavy metals testing · $0.06 per gram of protein.
Strengths:
- Strong protein-per-calorie at one of the lowest costs per gram of protein in the lineup.
- Casein in the blend slows digestion. Some find it more satiating between meals.
Weaknesses:

How to Use the Criteria on Any Protein Powder
So now you have the six criteria you can apply to any protein powder you ever encounter. Including ones we didn't test, ones launching next year, ones recommended to you by a friend, ones at the gym counter, ones in a hotel store on a work trip.
Pick up any pouch. Run the checks:
- Protein % calculation: protein × 4 ÷ total calories. Higher is better.
- Leucine: printed on the label?
- Amino acid completeness: do they publish PDCAAS or a full amino panel? If not, opacity is the data point.
- Sweetener and sugar load: Reb-M stevia, monk fruit, and allulose are clean. Avoid: Sucralose, ace-K, maltodextrin, and agave are caution flags.
- Clean formulation: read the ingredient list. Warning Flags (i.e. avoid): carrageenan, cellulose gum, xanthan, guar, soy lecithin, artificial flavors, soybean oil.

FAQ
Will protein powder actually help me lose weight?
Being in a calorie deficit (eating fewer calories than you need) is what makes you lose weight. Protein shakes (and protein generally) help you feel fuller, so eating fewer calories feels easier. When paired with resistance training, protein helps ensure the weight you lose is fat, not muscle and fat. Burning fat is typically the actual goal.
Does protein powder make you gain weight?
Only if it puts you over your calorie target. Protein doesn't make you gain fat; calories do. A 160-calorie shake replacing a 600-calorie pastry helps a diet. The same shake on top of a maintenance day adds weight, the same way any 160 calories would. Calories don't read the marketing copy.
How much protein should I have per day to lose weight?
Aim for 0.82–0.89g of protein per pound of bodyweight during a diet (or 1g/lb if you want easier math). For a 150lb adult, that's roughly 130–150g a day. Most adults get closer to 0.5g/lb, which isn't enough to preserve lean mass while losing fat. Bumping up to 0.8g/lb is usually the single highest-impact change you can make to a diet.
Whey or plant-based: which one and why?
Both work. The right answer depends on your gut (covered above). Whey wins on protein-per-calorie within its category, so pick it if you tolerate it. Plant-based wins for the half of adults past 35 who bloat on whey, especially those focusing on longevity at this stage of life. If you're not sure, run a two-week test on each.
Why does protein powder make me bloated?
Usually it's the formulation, not the protein. Common culprits: carrageenan, gums (cellulose, xanthan, guar, CMC), inulin, and dairy peptides if you're lactose-intolerant or A1-sensitive. Switch to a clean-formulation product and most people resolve within a week. If a clean-formulation whey still bloats you, the dairy itself is the issue. Move to a clean plant-based.
How long until I see weight loss from a protein routine?
Sustainable fat loss is roughly 0.5kg (about 1lb) per week. To hit that, you need a daily calorie deficit of roughly 500 calories. Give it two to four weeks for the scale to start moving in a way you can trust. The early changes are mostly water. If you've been on a clean protein routine for four weeks and the scale hasn't moved, the issue is calorie intake (almost certainly), not the protein.
Can I replace meals with protein shakes for weight loss?
Yes, and it works well when you add ingredients to bulk the shake into a real meal: oats, chia seeds, nut butter, banana. Treat it as a meal, not a meal replacement, and the math works.
